Multiple Universes
There are Multiple Universes in LOST , each one runs at the same time and pace as the others. They are fundamentally the same (same land, same geometry, etc) but have something that sets them apart. The Multiple Universes are very much alike however smaller events are different in each Universe.
Each Universe has its own set of Characters, its own version of the Characters. the Jack in one Universe behaves differently then the Jack in another Universe. for example, The Locke in One Universe might follow Faith and Free Will , however the Locke in Another Universe might follow Fate and Science.
The Characters/ Game Pieces can travel to another Universe, in fact, Part of the game play is for the Two Game Players to move certain versions of the Characters/game pieces in the current Universe to effectively carry out game objectives.
Thus, the current viewed Universe has a mesh of Characters that originated from different Universe. Sitting at the campfire could be a Jack1, Locke3, Kate4, Sawyer2, Michael3, Walt1, Charlie2, etc etc
Jack1 originated from Universe 1, Locke3 originated from Universe3 etc etc
Rabbit Holes
The
Characters travel to another Universe by use of Rabbit Holes, Thus,
we see a new version of that character.
In Season 1, when Charlie crawled under the rubble to save Jack, he went
thru a Rabbit hole and came out another way. Another Charlie enters the
current universe at the same time. The new Charlie is the Charlie that was
able to kick his addictions and also the Charlie of Faith.
In Season 1, the Hatch was a Rabbit Hole. Locke, Jack, and Kate went down it and the result is new versions of all 3 them. This is why they behave differently in Season 2.

The LOST game and show comprises of 2 Parallel Universes happening at the same time one is the Real World and the other is the Dark Underworld. the Game pieces can traverse both Realms to reach a desired outcome.
--- LIGHT Real World (Real Life, Land of the Living, Civilization ) The LIGHT players Realm, this is the Realm of how the LIGHT Player would have it.
--- DARK Underworld (Parallel) ( Land of the Dead , Hell). The DARK players Realm, this is the Realm of how the DARK Player would have it.
--- These worlds are both fundamentally the same (same land, same geometry, etc) but have something that sets them apart. Both worlds are very much alike however smaller events are different in each Universe.
--- Characters that are on the LIGHT side in the REAL WORLD Universe are on the DARK side in the Underworld Universe.
--- Characters that are on DARK side in the REAL WORLD Universe are on the LIGHT side in the Underworld Universe.
--- Time in both Parallel Universe's always match, they always run along side each other.
Mirrors
There are many scenes in LOST involving Mirrors. The Mirrors are used to signal that a character is "Changing" to their opposite side. Either from LIGHT to DARK or DARK to LIGHT. Mirrors have everything to do with the Mirrored Parallel Universe, they are the "Gates" to the other Universe. Its possible that the characters are actually crossing over and trading places with their opposite self. But what it means to us in LOST is a change in the Character, normally to their opposite personality.
Whooshes = Universe Jumps
The Whooshes that we hear before and after the flashbacks are used to signify a jump between Universes or Iterations between the scenes. There are different types of Whooshes. Each Whoosh represents a certain type of Universe "jump" in the involved neighboring scenes. Mostly the Whooshes are used before and after Flashbacks , but there are some hidden Whooshes in the middle of normal scenes.
Short Soft Whoosh - This is a very swift whoosh, with same volume to it beginning thru end. The Short Soft Whoosh is a jump from the Real World Universe to its parallel Underworld or from the Underworld to its parallel Real World. Thus, the involved flashback is a memory or event from its Mirrored Universe. The change we see in characters is the change of which god they follow. Characters that follow Jacob/Horus in one Universe, follow MIB/Seth in the other. We also could notice LIGHT and DARK changes as well.
Clicking Whoosh (1,2 or 3)- This Whoosh has 1, 2 or 3 clicks to it. It is used to signify an Iteration Jump. Thus, the involved Flashback is a memory or event from a Universe in a different Iteration. It very well may rotate the broach and LIGHT and DARK stays fixed.
Louder Ending Whoosh with Rumble - This could be a jump from a very next neighboring Iteration.
No Whoosh - If No Whoosh is used or heard , than the flashback is a memory or event in the very same Universe as the neighboring scene.
Hidden Whoosh's (basically a cleverly placed "Short Soft Whoosh" - Some Whooshes are very low volume and are cleverly hidden in the regular scenes and don't involve flashbacks. I have recognized a few. In Season 1 Episode 3 (bout 13mins in) , when Jack and Sawyer both are in the Fuselage "looting". We can hear a very low volume "Short Soft Whoosh" just before and after that scene of Jack and Sawyer "looting" in the fuselage. 1st Whoosh as the scene "enters' is just before we see Jack and just after thunder is heard. 2nd Whoosh is just when the scene is over and before we see Charlie and Claire. The involved scene of Jack and Sawyer is in the Mirrored Universe of the previous scene on the beach. Sawyer is getting booze, smokes and playboy and says "rescue ain't coming" , Thus Sawyer is on the LIGHT side of Jacob/Horus at this moment and Jack is on the DARK side of Seth, seeking rescue at this moment.
