the 4 classical elements are deeply involved in the storyline of LOST........
AIR <--------------------------> FIRE
WATER <--------------------> EARTH
Symbolism and dialogue of each Fire, Air ,Water and Earth appear in just about all of LOST's episodes, some deliberately and yet some cleverly hidden and blended in. The storyline of LIGHT vs DARK employs the forces of each of the elements and many locations and props on the Island pertain to one of the 4 elements.

Elements and their Time's of the Day
Often they will specify a certain time of the day - Dawn or Morning , Noon, Dusk or Night. I believe the time of day is very Astrological related and perhaps gives more power to the different Elements and sides. Game pieces that represent certain elements could perhaps be protected or have more power during specific times of the day. How long are they protected? How long of a window does someone of AIR have to be protected in the Morning? are they divided up in 6 hour windows?
Dawn is the Time of day for the Element AIR.(6:00 am to 11:59am) Those of AIR have more power during this 6 hour period.
Noon is the Time of day for the Element FIRE. (12:00 noon to 5:59 pm) Those of FIRE have more power during this 6 hour period.
Dusk is the Time of day for the Element WATER. (6:00 pm to 11:59 pm) Those of WATER have more power during this 6 hour period.
Midnight is the Time of day for the Element EARTH.(12:00 Midnight to 5:59 am) Those of EARTH have more power during this 6 hour period.
Finally, a reason for the use of all the watches in LOST, allowing us to see the time of day and who has more power.
Element Locations
Each Element also has more power in their respective map locations.
AIR locations : Trees, High places , clever use of trees to allow use of AIR locations. In Astrology, Trees are related to the AIR element. this is why a Banyan tree is protection, its actually a location of AIR.
FIRE locations: Camps with campfires, The Flame station, clever use of campfires to define a FIRE location.
EARTH locations: The Jungle, underground
WATER Locations: Ocean, lakes, camp with water source such as the Caves in season 1,
Combination of Element Time's and Location's equals great advantages in the game.
12 Signs of the Zodiac
Further, Astrology and the 12 Signs of the Zodiac are at play in LOST. In fact, every character represents one sign of the Zodiac at any given time and thus represents one of the 4 Elements as well......
The 12 signs of the Zodiac corresponds to the 4 Elements.....
ARIES, LEO, SAGITTARIUS are FIRE signs.
GEMINI, LIBRA, AQUARIUS are AIR signs.
VS
CANCER, SCORPIO, PISCES are WATER signs.
TAURUS,
VIRGO, CAPRICORN are
EARTH
signs.
the characteristics of each of the 12 signs of the Zodiac was indeed at play. and I found.....
---Every Character represents one of the 12 Signs of the Zodiac at each time.
--- Thus, Every Character represents one of the 4 elements FIRE AIR WATER or EARTH at any time. (as the 12 Zodiac Signs correspond to the 4 Elements noted above).
---Each character represents a different sign and element in each of the 4 Universes, Their Signs and Elements are not always the same throughout LOST.
--- The 4 Elements correspond to the 2 sides of the game ....LIGHT and DARK.... Fire & Air make up one side and Water & Earth the other.
FIRE & AIR ------VS------ WATER & EARTH
Hot/Warm side---------vs---------Cold/Cool side
Fire and Air are united and are known as the "Hot or Warm" Elements in astrology. Water and Earth are united and are known as the "Cool or Cold" Elements in astrology.
Anytime that a character is associated to either FIRE or AIR is on the opposite side of the any character that is associated to WATER or EARTH.
Symbolism of each of the 12 zodiac sun signs are used to serve as "Clues" that a character represents that specific sign.
Zodiac Sign Clue/Indicator: is any characteristic, trait or behavior that is used as symbolism for each of the 12 Zodiac Signs. a Zodiac Sign Clue is associated to a character to show us that character represents that particular Zodiac Sign at that particular time/universe, thus that character also represents the corresponding Element and further you can derive which side the character is on LIGHT or DARK.
Not only are the Characters associated to the Zodiac Signs, but the Zodiac Signs appear in other various forms in LOST.
Zodiac Sign Clue example: For instance, the horse that appeared to Kate was the forces of Sagittarius (FIRE) used by Jacob or MIB. The Horse is the animal of Sagittarius.
Aloe is the Herb of Scorpio. Aloe shows up many times in LOST. Whenever Aloe is used or specified by a character, then that symbolism is a Scorpio association/clue to that character.

I'm convinced the various fruit seen in LOST is used as symbolism to the 12 signs of the Zodiac.

"bananas, Papayas, Mangos, Guava, Passion Fruit, Coconuts"

The Orchid = AIR ? (as it is high up in the mountains) sounds Earthy, but it was a fake biotanical station
The Pearl = WATER (Pearl is the stone for Cancer, a WATER sign)
The Staff = EARTH (Healing)
The Swan =
The Tempest = AIR (Gemini Libra or Aquarius) Tempest is a violent wind storm

"Meteorology station" = AIR theorized station , yet to see...would be AIR
